It's been 4 years since I haved started learning Japanese
Throughout those 4 years I have tested a lot of tools and I haved use a lot of ressources, so now I just want to share what are my findings after all those years of studying
YumeGo (Netflix-first immersion) (chrome extension)
Best for: learning Japanese without breaking the rythm, simple, dashboard, flashcards and translation with also an option AI
YumeGo analyzes Japanese Netflix subtitles in real time and that's cool
2. Migaku
Extremely powerful, especially for mining and flashcards. Very cool and more complete but too difficult to handle, to much information, not for me
That said, it can feel heavy and overwhelming during immersion.
Great tool, but not always fun to use while watching.
3. Anki
I Mean ANKI, clearly the most important app of this top 10
Essential for long-term retention.
Best used with immersion tools, not alone.
4. Language Reactor
Simple and accessible for Netflix/YouTube.
Limited grammar depth and limited defintion, general not meant for japanese and contextual explanations.
5. YouTube immersion channels
Great input, loved it, nihongo no mori, japanesewithshun ....
Excellent structured grammar practice.
Not an immersion tool, but a good complement.
6. JPDB
Strong vocabulary database.
Less useful during real-time content consumption.
7. Jisho & online dictionaries
Useful, but manually searching kills immersion.
8. Netflix Japan (+ VPN)
Unlocks the best Japanese content with native subtitles.
9. Bunpro
Excellent structured grammar practice.
Not an immersion tool, but a good complement..
10. Textbooks
Good foundations, limited real-world exposure. NIHONGOMATOMETE
Final thoughts
Immersion works best when tools support watching, not interrupt it.
For me, Netflix + Japanese subtitles + lightweight analysis made the biggest difference.
